Wonders, the birth of Woody

It is nice when our jennets exhibit the signs of an impending delivery. Sometimes we "read" the signs and sometimes we don't. We have been surprised by a new, little, fluffed out foal in the morning and had the enjoyment of watching a birth from start to finish. This is usually a time during which there is a little uneasiness, but a lot of excitement. Yesterday was the second time this spring I was home and watching at just the right time. Our new Mom cooperated wonderfully, giving me several warnings that it was almost time to deliver, so I kept an eye on her most of the day. She rewarded me with a smooth delivery around 4:00 pm, and I watched as this feisty little jack was born.

Like human Moms, some jennets seem to have a harder time delivering than others. Whether it is due to age, previous experience or some unknown factor, they have their own little way of foaling and sometimes it is lengthy, other times it is fast. This birth was a fast one and there was no time to be nervous, on my part! Usually, the new foal rests a bit, then struggles to his or her feet and sticks close to Mom, eventually figuring out where that first meal comes from. Not so with this little fella! He delivered in full motion, ready to meet the world and everything in it. He was on his feet within 15 minutes, then proceeded to wobble around getting his 'wits about him,' before taking off to explore. He wandered all around, with Mom and us nearby, keeping a close watch on him. We did the necessary care and placed the two of them in a clean stall so SHE could get some rest. I think this little jack is going to be full of himself and fun to watch.

Whether it is a tiny new chick, slowly pecking it's way out of an egg, or a fully formed miniature donkey, able to stand, nurse and walk around within a short time of being born, I am still in awe at the wonders God has given us on this earth and thankful for the opportunity to be reminded of them.
