One of our favorite things to do is head to the porch first thing in the morning to enjoy a cup of coffee and a little break before starting the day. We take a quick look around, scanning the pastures to see where all of our animals are and enjoy the (slight) cool of the morning. On a recent Saturday morning, we were settling into our chairs, coffee in hand and brains slowly awakening, when we noticed something new. Out in our back pasture, happily munching grass, was a beautiful black and white cow! At first glance, it looked like just another donkey, except for the color, the fact that it was not a donkey and we don't own any cows! Our donkeys didn't seem to mind and continued to graze, but kept an eye on the cow.
Thanks to the Feb. tornado, we have some large trees that had to be removed from the fence line. This left huge mounds of earth and root systems close to the fence on one side, and a large portion of tree trunk on the other. We decided to follow the cow to discover how she came over for a visit from the neighboring farm. We never knew cows were so agile! She began to move quickly across the pasture, cutting through the woods, up the 'ramp' of the root ball, over the top of the fence and down the other side on the fallen tree trunk. It was a funny sight to see and obvious that she knew exactly how to cross over from field to field. Thankfully, our jack was too busy keeping watch on the jennets in the pasture to realize he could follow the cow.
The fence has now been raised to prevent any more strange looking 'donkeys' from showing up in our pasture. Now, we can enjoy our cup of coffee and look out on our farm without any surprises, until the animals devise a new plan and figure out a way to come and visit.
